How having less toys made my children happier?

Hello my darlings, today’s post is going to be about why we stop buying so many toys for our kids.

I have to admit, I was one of those parents who just wanted to buy every toy under the sun for my kids. I wanted them to have everything their hearts desire. I was assuming that buying more things is gonna make then happy. Boy, how was I wrong.

Very quickly we have learned, not only that buying more things did not make them happy, but they have stopped appreciating things they have. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t their fault, I blame us, we thought that was the right way to show them how much we love them. Big mistake, big.

The moment my kids started throwing tantrums because we didn’t buy what they wanted, was the moment we realized that we are raising a couple of spoiled kids. And it was a huge wake-up call. That needed to stop. I got through their old toys and got rid of things that are broken, or they are not using anymore and got rid of everything. I only kept the things they love. They haven’t even notice that they have fewer toys. They just loved that they can see all their stuff.

I also reorganized their rooms. And they can easily find it. We also stop buying new toys, there was no need to. They already had so many toys that they didn’t even use. I wish I could say that was the moment they started appreciating things they had, but no, it took a while. They tried to make us buy more, but we didn’t give in to. We were determined to stick to this new rule. And after a while, they stop expecting a new toy and started happily playing with the ones they already had. And that was life-changing.

Now we can go to the toy store to buy gifts for their friends, and they are not expecting to buy anything for them. Don’t get me wrong, we still love to buy them something they love from time to time, the only difference is they now know to appreciate it.

I think that we as parents learned a big lesson. You can’t substitute your presence for a present. It doesn’t work like that. And you can’t buy their happiness. And most of all, we have learned that all they want to is to spend quality time with mom and dad outside riding bicycles, play in the park or just go outside for a walk with their pets. And that is really what makes them happy, and not a new toy, or tablet.

I hope you like this kind of post my darlings. Tell me in the comments below, do you also practice „less is more“ with toys. Let us chat in the comments below.

Until tomorrow my darlings, love you, stay safe. And I will talk to you soon.
